I believe limiting crops to a single species per tray/section is a mistake, especially in the domes. Mixing species is almost always benefitial IRL, it casts a shadow over what is otherwise one of the games best mechanics, and more diverse gardens would fill a decor/customization niche the game is lacking.
While I think the intent of single crop plots is to drive building expansion, it must be recognized that no one at the dome stage of the game is really hurting for resources.
Species mixing would also allow the future addition of ferns/flowers. These are common in labs and offer the opportunity for a rare high Oxygen nonfood option that could be highly sought after in the early game, further driving exploration.
