Lightning storms are never ending. After the sigil in the lower right of the screen stops flashing, the storm is still ongoing. I slept for 3 days straight and there was still lightning. I can load a savegame after the storm sigil has disappeared and the storm will have stopped, but it normally comes back after 24 or so of game time.
